Gallimimus bullatus

Description

Gallimimus is probably the most popular ornithomimid, mainly thanks to its multiple appearances in the Jurassic Park saga. However, the mediatic mass-view of this animal is still very different from any modern reconstruction. Like many (if not all) coelurosaurs, ornithomimids were covered in feathers too, and thanks to a beautifully preserved specimen of Ornithomimus we also know that they had naked bare skin on their hindlimbs, probably with a thermoregulatory purpose exactly like we observe in modern Ostrich (www.clubpimble.com/uploads/hea…). Despite being often described as defenseless animals, if cornered they probably displayed aggressive defensive behaviours; again like modern ratites, I am sure that a Gallimimus' kick would have been able to injure or even kill small to medium sized predators.
Often depicted in desertic environments, Gallimimus' remains are instead found mainly in deposits that suggest the presence of stream and river channels, mudflats, and shallow lakes, a habitat that would appear similar to some tropical river delta.
In 2001 an interesting discovery was reported, describing a skull retaining traces of keratinous beak with vertical grooves projecting from the bony upper mandible (www.nature.com/nature/journal/…), surprisingly similar to the lamellae seen in ducks (cdn1.arkive.org/media/2F/2FAD0…). However, since this animal was way too big to survive only with a water-filtering based diet, it probably was an herbivore, possibly occasionally omnivore like the vast majority of modern ground dwelling birds.
I added speculative skinny cheecks to the sides of my Gallimimus' mouth, resulting in a shorter beak than in many other depictions.

One of the best I have seen so far. Congratulations!

PS: Many reconstructions seem to lack feathers on the fingers. I know there is evidence for such feathers in dromaeosaurids, but what about ornithomids?
